Department Overview
The Knight Cardiovascular Institute (KCVI) is recognized as a top integrated center for cardiovascular clinical care, translational research and professional training in all aspects of heart and vascular disease. Guided by a multi-disciplinary approach, researchers and clinicians drive a vibrant translational research program, which focuses on delivering the latest knowledge and cutting edge care to patients. Specifically, research at KCVI seeks to improve patient outcomes by achieving earlier diagnosis of disease, more accurate monitoring of its progression, and tailoring therapy to the molecular basis of disease.
The Structural Heart Disease APP will focus on the clinical and research care of patients in the Valvular Heart Disease Clinic at OHSU. This clinic serves over 1,000 patients each year and performs more than 300 structural procedures annually. The OHSU Valvular Heart Disease team is a leader in treating valvular heart disease, known for innovative first-in-human structural heart implants and participation in early-feasibility studies and pivotal clinical trials. As part of this team, you will collaborate with one nurse coordinator, two other clinical APPs, six physician partners, and several research assistants. The position requires on-site work 4-5 days a week, including dedicated days for clinic appointments and research coordination.
This position reports to (supervisor): Section Head for Interventional Cardiology and the Medical Director for Clinical Trials.
Function/Duties of Position
Position Purpose
In this advanced practice provider position , you will provide care to patients primarily in an outpatient setting, with the possibility of engaging in inpatient care and consultations. The Valvular Heart Disease Clinic conducts patient care visits five days a week, along with additional inpatient care, pre- and post-procedural support, and clinical care coordination activities throughout the week. You will be part of a team including two other advanced practice providers, one nurse coordinator, six physicians specializing in non-invasive cardiology, interventional cardiology, and cardiac surgery, and research coordinators. In this role, you will be an integral part of the multidisciplinary team, participating in weekly meetings to present and evaluate complex patient cases.
Scope of range within unit population: Adolescent through geriatric cardiology patients.

- Support clinical research related to these patients.
- Screen new patients for clinical trials in valvular heart disease and structural heart disease.
- Manage patient care according to research protocols.
- Conduct medical histories and physical examinations.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests and laboratory results.
- Prescribe appropriate medications and treatments.
- Assess clinical and research-related issues.
- Educate patients and staff.
- Perform administrative tasks to support study selection and reporting requirements.

Standard 1: Care Planning and Delivery
- Develop and document a care plan for each patient with support from the multidisciplinary valvular heart disease team.
- Obtain necessary lab tests or studies and arrange follow-up visits.
- Provide education and referrals for new issues identified during care.
- Educate patients about their condition, treatment options, and potential complications.
- Serve as a co-investigator in clinical research studies.
- Monitor and document patient responses to therapy, sharing findings and recommendations with principal investigators.
- Collaborate with the study coordination team to ensure safe and compliant implementation of research protocols and maintain the integrity of research data.
- Promote and maintain service excellence and a patient-first philosophy in all interactions.
- Perform job duties ethically and professionally, reporting any compliance issues following established processes; demonstrate e thical behavior and integrity.
- Support OHSU’s educational mission by teaching and mentoring clinical learners at various levels (NP/PA students, medical students, residents/fellows).
- Engage in continuing education opportunities to stay updated in the field and apply knowledge to improve clinical quality and patient experience.
Required Qualifications
- Current Nurse Practitioner license for the state of Oregon
- State of Oregon Nurse Practitioner Prescriptive Privileges
- ACNP or AGACNP required for inpatient services
- ACLS and BLS certification
- Current & Active Physician Assistant license for State of Oregon
- DEA certificate
- ACLS and BLS certification
Experience
- 2 years prior experience as an APP
- Experience working with cardiology patients
- Experience working with patients/participants in clinical research/trials is preferred
- Experience in an academic medical center
- Membership in a professional organization
